Things to do in Cannon Beach

Updated: Apr 26, 2020

Cannon Beach is a wonderful weekend getaway that can be enjoyed anytime of the year!

Since we have been to Cannon Beach on multiple occasions, we have created this list of our favorite things to do while we visit this world class beach.

Morning stroll to Haystack Rock

Wake up early to stroll the beach. You will catch views of Haystack Rock in the stunning morning light before others. Make your morning walk more enjoyable with a coffee from either Insomnia Coffee Co. or Sleepy Monk Coffee. Don't forget your camera!

Picnic at Hug Point

Take a picnic to Hug Point. This is a beautiful beach has sea caves and tide pools to explore at low tide. Be aware: the parking lot can be packed and a bit tricky to navigate on gorgeous days.

Hike & Watch surfers at Oswald west State Park

Oswald West State Park is packed with stunning hiking trails and Short Sand Beach, which is a great place to watch surfers catch some waves. If you feel like getting a few miles under your belt, check out the 4.6 mile round-trip hike to Cape Falcon. This trail meanders through a temperate rain forest, and offers picturesque scenery of the coastline.

Explore Tide pools

Spend time exploring some of the best tide pools the coast has to offer at Haystack Rock, Crescent Beach, or Silver Point. Check the tide charts for information on low tide.

sunset at Ecola State Park

This park offers a breathtaking viewpoint over the Oregon coastline, and is a perfect place to catch a sunset. If you get there before sunset, there are many hiking trails throughout the park. You can wander down to Crescent Beach, which is 2.5 miles round-trip from the Ecola Point Day-Use Area. If you are looking for a longer stroll, try the Clatsop Loop Trail. We were able to watch whales from the viewpoints this hike offers.

Beach bonfire & Stargaze

End a day cuddle up next to a bonfire and gazing up to the stars. You are allowed to have bonfires on the open beach, as long as you follow the rules. Currently, your fire must not be larger than 3 feet. Fires must be away from vegetation and driftwood. As always, never leave a fire unattended, and ensure to fully extinguish the flame when you leave.

Recommended Place to Stay:

The Inn at Cannon Beach is our favorite place to stay when we are in the area. The inn provides easy access to the beach. Hospitality is their top priority. The staff is so welcoming and they offer free movie rentals, cookies, salt-water taffy, and a delicious complimentary breakfast. The guest rooms are clean with very comfortable beds.

Recommended Places to Eat:

There are many great places to grab some grub in Cannon Beach. Every trip we make to Cannon Beach, we make an effort to go back to Tom's Fish & Chips, Insomnia Coffee Co. and Sleepy Monk Coffee. You should definitely try these!
